Searchers – Bible Book Club - Peter

We turned the spotlight on the book of 1 Peter.

Summary: hope due to Christ’s resurrection, despite suffering.

Key words: hope, faith, trust, grace, peace, holy, good, suffering, resurrection, glory.

Themes: being a Christian, how to behave, suffering for Christ, preparing for persecution, hope of glory.

Key verses:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1.3

“For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.” 1 Peter 3:18

Helen selected this verse as she feels it summarises what Christ has done for us.

Lindy shared how she found, especially in chapters 1 and 2, verse after verse of reassurance, promise and inspiration. Also, in the last chapter, despite facing suffering, Peter wants Christians to know that their maker will not fail them – God is going to be there for you. When Christians face difficulty they have the promise of God’s love and his support. God’s succour will bring us through.

Dorothy shared one sentence she’d read in a commentary:

“1 Peter has spiritual authority and relevance to the Christian life in every age.”
